My dad started driving for Uber yesterday. His first passenger... didn’t have a smartphone. The guy ordered the ride from his wifi-only ipad back in his house, and didn’t bring the ipad with him, so neither of them was sure what to do to complete payment at the end of the trip.

Remember that my dad is 74 years old, and he’s driving my old 2500 Yukon XL 8.1... and he’s not very tech-savvy. He has fumbly fingers and got his first smartphone the day before... So this may not go all that well in the long run. But who knows.

So since neither of them was sure what to do at the end of the ride, the passenger gave $10 cash and left... ??? Oh well. I hope it gets better for him! At least he got approved as an Uber XL driver!

Really?

I’ve ordered rides for people before, and it’s done and paid for before the ever get in the car.

I’ve never had to click “ride over” or anything like that when I’ve used them. I’m pretty sure the driver notes that the ride is over and it automatically charges the rider’s credit card on their account.

That’s how I thought it was supposed to go, but since I have zero experience with Uber I wasn’t sure what to tell him to do! I told him there is supposed to be a ‘ride start’ and ‘ride over’ button on his app.

I have no experience with Uber, and my dad certainly doesn’t. It was his first fare, so he had no idea what he was doing, and the passenger sounded clueless as well, so I had no idea what to tell him!

When you ride with Uber, does the driver typically have the app open the entire time?

Yes, the driver starts the ride and ends it.

Only used it once, but as the rider there’s nothing to do on their end. As mentioned, I’m pretty sure the Uber app does everything you need as a driver. And I think part of the reason that you tell the app that the ride is over is so that it puts you back into the pool of prospective drivers to pick from. This is what I learned from the conversation I had with my Uber driver when I used it.

An 8.1 liter 3/4 ton Yukon as an Uber vehicle?!?

I had a 2500 Silverado 8.1, thing got like 10 mpg.

Yeah, it gets about 12. But he can take large groups on airport runs... It’s definitely not the best vehicle for the job, but it’s what he has...

Yes sir, they can haul large groups and their stuff with ease and comfort. Loved the 8.1. Thing was a beast after catback intake and tune.

I hate Uber because of their anti-gun policy, but that would not stop me from driving for them if I needed cash. It also would not stop me from carrying my gun.
